I bought this book for my son. It has actually turned out be be a great coffee table book. It has served as a great conversation starter/activity for the cocktail parties. The grown-ups love it more than the kids....I think because we all did this when we were kids.....good memories. It's fun to watch everyone remember how to do it!

I ordered this on a Thurs night and it came OVERNIGHTED at no charge the next day. This piece of string and book of how to use it reminds me of middle school! There is not much to it but it is fun for a few minutes ;)

A 10 year old neighbor girl was delighted to receive this from us and has enjoyed figuring out the "moves" with a friend. Seems to be clearly explained but may take more than one attempt so don't be discouraged!

My 10 year old daughter can read & understand all the instructions herself. There are tasks in the book which she can do herself & other tricks that you need a partner for. This is well geared toward a 10 year old.

At Christmas we like to buy fun things for our adult children that can bring back memories and provide activities that fill the holiday visits. My daughter and I really had fun learning the moves all over again.

This user-friendly booklet provides hours of fun. Great, really helpful illustrations with each step. Comes with a sturdy string that's perfect. We especially like how there are some patterns one person can do alone as well as the instructions for the traditional two-person cat's cradle. My nine-year-old niece loves this!

As an instructional guide this book is very good. However, my book arrived without the string so I had to improvise with a pair of shoelaces tied together. Very easy to follow directions if you are looking to quickly learn some classic string tricks.

I really enjoyed this book. I purchased it for my daughter and ended up using it myself. It really brought back a lot of memories. The illustrations and directions are great. For all you kids (and kids at heart) --Buy the book.

Bought this for my son who has been using thin yarn to play different finger games. Unfortunately, three of the strings that came with the book are pink and purple. Not sure that he will use them. Would have liked the red and orange strings that are pictured.

My 10-year-old daughter loved this. I left it as a surprise one summer day and when I came home from work her and the sitter had figured out how to do several of the tricks. Plus the string is easy to take along in the car or to a restaurants. Very pleased with this.

My daughter came home from school with a makeshift yarn version of a cats cradle string. It was ironic because I had ordered this a day prior on a whim because I enjoyed it as a child and thought it would be fun for us to do together. Apparently it's popular in her school again and she was super excited when she finally received this. The string quality is great and she enjoyed the book, although she has since moved on to other tricks not in the book.

I ordered this book for my daughter for Christmas. It was delivered when promised, however it was missing the colored string that comes with the book. I returned it and was refunded.I ended up having to go to Barnes and Noble. I will never order from go Hastings again.

Got the book for an 8 year-old recovering from a surgery. Her dad reports that she loved the games. I was a little disappointed there were only 5 games in this edition, but since she was happy with it, it served it's purpose. (I had another string games book that I had given to my daughter when she was young ... passed that along, too ... it had many more variations of string games in it.)

i showed my 7yr old niece how to do this without the book & she remembered every single step. I then bought her the book b/c this string is awesome & that way she’d be able to look back at the pictures in case she forgot how to do some of them. I love cats cradle, there was a time before technology kids had to entertain ourselves, this was one of them. Great for girls & boys! Boys will do this, they may think it’s girly & it may not last long but, at least they are interacting/ talking with/to a girl.

I wish I had this book when I was a kid! I always remember there were girls who knew how to do string tricks and I could never remember how to do them. This book is easy to follow, fun for a 5 year old and any grown up girls who remember doing cat's cradle, Jacob's ladder, etc. I wish there were more games in the book, but it's still fun. (I think there are 4 string patterns to follow...but one has steps that are longer.)

We bought this on vacation for my five year old daughter, and it turned out to be the perfect gift. The pictures are clear--not just diagrams with arrows, but pictures of the hands, showing every little step. The string is included--an important point, since they fuse the ends of the string rather than tying them, making it much easier for little hands. Jesse was better at learning by doing than reading the diagrams, but she was able to use them to figure out what she was doing wrong once she had it more or less right.
The book contains five string patterns: Cup and Saucer, Eiffel Tower, Witch's Broom, Cat's Cradle, and Jacob's Ladder; though in fact Cup and Saucer is a stage on the way to Eiffel Tower. We found that Jesse could do Cup and Saucer and Witch's Broom just fine, though Eiffel Tower was a little trickier. Cat's Cradle was doable with some coaching--made a bit harder by the fact that it's a two person figure. Jacob's Ladder, however, is much more complicated, and will take an adult quite a few minutes to master.
Most of us, myself included, have done some string figures as children, usually Cat's Cradle, and I have to say I got as much fun out of this as Jesse. But Jesse had fun too--the string is brightly coloured and the string figures are good, strong simple shapes. It was days before she stopped showing off her "Cup and Saucer" to us!

I just gave this to my 5 1/2 year old. I bought it years ago for my older kids who are now teenagers and I was saving it till I thought my youngest could do the activities independently without getting frustrated. Well, she took the string, glanced at the examples in the book, tossed it aside and came up with her own creations! The string, I guess, is more important than the book, but the pictures in the book provided inspiration and a "stepping off point" for her own creativity. I have never been disappointed with any of the Klutz Press products I have got for my kids.

This is a great book which my kids have and I purchased for children of friends. However, unlike the photo this is not the spiral version. You need the spiral version so that it can be propped open (with no hands). Better to purchase the spiral version elsewhere.

Remember doing these as a kid? We never had the book, and just made our string from a yarn ball, but this book is good to give as a gift as a starter. If they like it I suggest Fascinating String Figures (Master String Figures). This is also a way of keeping this from becoming a lost form of fun!

I use this book at home with my children but I use it even more in ESL classes. Learning a language is much easier when you're DOING something. The string figures have been a good activity to use in learning to give directions, explain, practice short sentences and even to use as an attention getter for a grammar lesson.
As mentioned in other reviews, both adults and children enjoy them and string figures are universally known and appreciated.

This is a fabulous book with bright colors and fun artwork. The directions are easy to follow and everyone can be successful when trying these string games. I have used this book to teach large groups of people how to play string games and they loved it. This is a good book for anyone interested in learning basic string games. The book came with a string to make the designs, so you don't have to make one.

I had this book when I was a kid and I recently bought it for a 6-year-old girl. It's nice that it comes with a string, and it has simple, easy-to-follow directions which are a great start for a child who wants to learn string figures and cat's cradle. However, it can get pretty boring once they've mastered the 3 or 4 string figures described in the book.

Doing the string figures became a fad at my six year old daughter's school, so of course she had to learn to do them. Within a few hours of getting this book she taught herself all five of the included figures, and quickly became facile enough with the process to pick up new one's from her friends. The book definitely exceeded my expectations.

I got this book when I was a little kid of elementary school age (I'm now 22) and I still remember everything I learned from it. It's a fun, easy book to learn from and now I have a silly party trick I can pull out to show people.

Got this 'used/3rd party' for a great price and we love this. It's got all the old ones from when I grew up and couldn't remember, and my 9-year-old taught herself and is teaching me.
Great binding. Excellent thing to do while waiting and for fine motor skills development. Good quiet time activity. Well worth it.
